West Virginia University Press is pleased to announce that Centerville author Karen Osborn will speak at the Virginia Book Festival on March 22, 2013 at 2pm.

Lee Maynard returns to West Virginia to discuss the third and final part to the Crum trilogy

West Virginia University Press is pleased to announce Lee Maynard’s 2012 Scummers book tour, which commemorates the publication of The Scummers.  During this tour, Maynard will read and discuss this book at various venues across West Virginia, including Charleston, Bridgeport, Morgantown, and Lewisburg.

Independent Publisher has selected two West Virginia University Press books as gold medal recipients in its 2012 “IPPY” Awards contest.

Uncommon Vernacular exhibit on display at Nutting Gallery, WVU Alumni Center

An exhibit featuring photographs and illustrations from the era when George Washington’s family settled in West Virginia is on display at the the Nutting Gallery at the West Virginia University Erickson Alumni Center in Morgantown.

This exhibit, curated by assistant professor and curator of the WVU art collection, Robert Bridges, will be on display from Feb. 24 until June 29.

Association of American University Presses Recognizes Uncommon Vernacular

Judging for the 2012 Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show took place from January 26-27, 2012 at the AAUP Central Office in New York City. Approximately 226 books, 300 jacket and cover design entries, and 4 journals were entered. Forty-nine books, 1 journal, and 30 jackets/covers were chosen by the jurors as the very best examples from this pool of excellent design.

In Memoriam: Irene McKinney, West Virginia Poet Laureate

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Irene McKinney, who returned to her native West Virginia and served as the state's poet laureate for nearly two decades, died Saturday morning at the age of 72.

McKinney, who was also the director of the creative writing program at West Virginia Wesleyan College, wrote "lyrical poetry [that] is steeped in the rural Appalachian landscape and frequently explores the connections between people and place," according to her biography on the Poetry Foundation's website.

Old South, New South, or Down South? wins 2010 Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award

Old South, New South, or Down South? Florida and the Modern Civil Rights Movement wins the 2010 Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award.

The Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award recognizes an outstanding book relating to Florida's ethnic groups. Sponsored by the Florida Historical Society, winners of this award have exposed and analyzed a significant social issue from a historical perspective.

Series Launch: Regenerations: African American Literature and Culture

Regenerations: African American Literature and Culture is a new series devoted to reprinting editions of important African American texts that either have fallen out of print or have failed to receive the attention they deserve. 

Regenerations encourages research that develops and extends the understanding of African American literary and cultural history, while promoting regional and local research that represents the complex dynamics of African American experience.
